Why I Left Bonobos (and Why I'm Writing This Blog)
After 10 years fitting over 5,000 men at Bonobos Guideshops, I walked away to tell the truth about fit. No trends, no shame — just practical advice that actually helps regular guys look and feel better in their clothes. Fit first. The rest is noise.

The Day I Realized I Was Done

It was a Tuesday afternoon in the Nashville Guideshop. A guy in his mid-40s, broad shoulders, dad bod in full effect, stood in front of the mirror tugging at a dress shirt that was choking him at the collar while billowing like a sail around his middle. He looked exhausted. Not from work — from shopping. I’d seen that look thousands of times.

I adjusted the shirt, showed him a different size and cut, and watched his shoulders drop in relief. “Why didn’t anyone tell me this before?” he asked.

That was the moment. I’d spent a decade giving men these little moments of relief, but the company was shifting toward flashier marketing and trendier lines. I realized I wanted to help more guys without the corporate script. So I left.

This blog is what came next.

What 10 Years in the Fitting Room Actually Taught Me

I didn’t start at Bonobos thinking I’d become a fit obsessive. I just needed a job that didn’t suck. What I got was an education in the male body that no fashion school could provide.

I measured engineers and construction workers, lawyers and teachers, guys who lifted heavy and guys who sat at desks. Tall, short, thick through the middle, built like linebackers, or built like nothing at all. After 5,000+ fittings, patterns became obvious.

Vanity sizing is real. Size guides are optimistic at best, outright lies at worst. A “medium” from one brand can be four inches bigger in the chest than another. Most men are walking around in clothes that are close enough but never quite right — and they’ve accepted it as normal.

The biggest lie in men’s clothing? “It’ll be fine after a few washes.” No, it won’t. If it doesn’t fit properly now, it’s not going to magically improve.

Why “Fit First” Matters More Than Trends

Here’s the thing most style blogs won’t tell you: most men don’t need more clothes. They need clothes that actually fit the body they have right now.

You can own three perfect shirts that make you look put-together and confident, or fifteen “okay” ones that make you feel meh. I’ll take the three every time.

That’s why this blog exists. No runway nonsense. No “this season’s must-have.” Just honest talk about how a shirt collar should sit, why your pants are probably too long, and which brands actually cut for real adult male bodies instead of 22-year-old models.

Fit first. The rest is noise.

The Real Reason I Left

Bonobos started with a revolutionary idea: let guys try things on properly before buying online. I was on the opening team for the Nashville shop. We built something special — a place where men could admit they hated shopping and still walk out feeling good.

Over time, the focus shifted. More emphasis on chasing younger customers, trendier cuts, influencer partnerships. The patient, one-guy-at-a-time approach that made the Guideshop magic started taking a backseat.

I don’t blame them. Business is business. But I missed the pure satisfaction of helping a regular guy — the one with a mortgage, a kid in soccer, and zero interest in “quiet luxury” — find pants that didn’t make him look like he was wearing his dad’s clothes or his teenager’s skinny jeans.

So I handed in my resignation, kept my measuring tape, and started Travis Dunham Styling. Now I’m writing here because the internet needs more voices that sound like the guy in the fitting room, not the guy on the runway.

What You Can Expect From This Blog

Practical, patient advice. Stories from the fitting room. Real talk about what works on actual bodies.

We’ll cover:

  • The 30-second mirror tests that actually matter

  • Why certain brands work for certain builds

  • How to fix common fit problems without going custom

  • Shopping strategies that respect your time and wallet

No judgment if your current wardrobe is all free company T-shirts and worn-out jeans. We’ve all been there. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress that feels good.

One Last Story Before You Go

Last month I was helping a client who’s about 5'8", carries his weight in the middle, and has thighs that don’t quit. He’d been buying “relaxed fit” pants that still felt restrictive. We found a brand that actually understands proportions. When he put them on and could squat without feeling like the seams were going to surrender, the look on his face was priceless.

That’s the feeling I want for every reader here. Not “fashionable.” Just comfortable in your own skin — and in your clothes.

Starting Your Own Fit-First Journey

You don’t need to throw out your entire closet tomorrow. Start simple.

Stand in front of a mirror in your usual work outfit. Check these three things:

  1. Does your shirt collar sit comfortably without choking or gaping?

  2. When you sit, do your pants pull tight across the thighs or gap at the waist?

  3. Can you move your arms naturally without the shoulder seam digging in?

If the answer is no to any of these, we’ve got work to do — and I’ll be right here walking you through it.
